Billions of dollars in oil and gas investments have brought development and tourism to Sakhalin, an island that once just a penal colony during tsarist times. Major oil companies such as ExxonMobil and Shell maintain a presence there. Good food and hotels catering to foreigners are available. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has only about 200,000 residents, but boasts 52 hotels, countless banks and shopping malls, as well as local and foreign businesses.

ADVENTURE DESTINATION: As an adventure travel destination, Sakhalin has plenty of beautiful natural scenery to offer.  Recreational opportunities such as hiking, diving, rafting, boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing abound.

MUSEUMS: Housed in a former Japanese administration building, the Sakhalin Regional Museum offers a good collection of natural and historic artifacts from different parts of Sakhalin Island and the Kurils. There are also the Chekhov Literary and Art Museum, featuring items from the everyday life of Anton Chekhov and his family; the Railway Museum features an open-air exhibition of old locomotives and railway trucks, including Japanese machinery operated on Sakhalin; and the Sakhalin Regional Art Museum features exhibitions on Russian and Japanese heritage.

GETTING TO YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK:

We are pleased to announce that Russian carrier Aurora Airlines will commence twice-weekly service between Tokyo’s Narita Airport (NRT) and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (UUS) on Sakhalin Island on May 1.
